Smith 1898 - The Malt Shovel Inn was formerly located in the Old Fold, Jackson Lane and in the late 1790’s was transferred to the foot of Chapel Hill on the site of the present Conservative club. “Old” was added to the title after the relocation to Chapel hill to show that it was the old original house. F: Baines 1822, Pigot 1841, White 1853. The pub must therefore have closed sometime between 1853 and 1898.
