White Horse Inn

Brewery owner 1970 – John Smith’s. Pub closed around 2012 and the premises were converted in to an Italian restaurant.

Wheatsheaf Inn

D.Atkinson “The Wheatsheaf dated back to the 17th Century and was probably the location nearby for the murder of the landlord, John Fletcher, by the highwayman Will Nevison which was marked by a stone further along the lane to Howley Hall. The Wheatsheaf had several sports fields around it and at least one amateur rugby team used the inn as its headquarters before the first world war. The pub was demolished in the 1930s.”

Valley Hotel

Built in the 1850s shortly after Morley Low station became operational and it was sometimes used for inquests. Licensee 1905 – Louisa Todd. Source states brewery owner changed from Warwick to John Smith’s. Demolished in the 1960s.

Sycamore Hotel

In 1871 William Wass was the landlord and after his death his wife, Emma Wass took over – 1871 census. By 1891 Emma’s son in law, Henry Hartley was the landlord. Licensee 1905 – David Tetley. Brewery owner 1970 Tetley’s. The pub closed in 2010 and the premises were converted in to apartments

Stump Cross Inn

  Name Stump Cross Inn Address Britannia Road, Morley LS27 0DD Built Late 1890s Closed No Demolished No Notes F: Baines 1822. W.Smith 1898 refers to “...a new erection which has supplanted the old original house, in front of which was a stone with a cross in it” which means that the present building was built in the late 1890s. In 1891 Richard Ackroyd, a stonemason, bought the pub from John Dawson. A stone cross here marked the boundary between Morley and Woodkirk for many years. Brewery owner 1970 – BYB. 9 April 2023 Whatpub .com posted on its website that the pub is permanently closed and its future is uncertain.

Royal

  Name Royal Address 2 Station Road, Morley LS27 8JW Built ? Closed No Demolished No Notes F: P.O. Directory 1861. The pub was used for inquests, the most documented was the one held after the explosion at Morley main colliery on 7 October 1872 when 33 men were killed. One landlord was Ben Fieldhouse JP. Licensee 1905 – John Parratt. Brewery owner 1970 John Smith’s. In 2006 the pub was renamed Last Orders but later it reverted back to the original name of the Royal

Rock Inn

  Rock premises now Name Rock Inn Address 2-8 Albert Road, Morley LS27 8JU Built ? Closed Yes approx 2011 Demolished No Notes Morley Corporation Minutes November 1898 - November 1899, Highways Streets and Sewage Committe Jan 23 1899 (Page 89) stated that a letter was read from Mr W.G. Vickers of Normanton asking permission to rent the land at the Rock Inn for a theatre. Resolved that Mr Vickers be informed that that the Council have decided that the land shall not be let for theatrical purposes. No directory information before 1936 when Mrs Ada Conyers was the landlady. Not known if she was related to Mrs Louise Conyers. Licensee 1905 – John Arthur Sykes. Brewery owner 1970 Tetley’s. Pub closed in approximately 2011 and converted back to five terrace houses.

Red Lion Inn

Queen Hotel

  Name Queen Hotel Address Queen27 8DY Built 1870’s Closed No Demolished No Notes Ben Worrall purchased the Alliance Hotel and refreshment rooms and Posting House which was on the present site. He converted the building into a 5 storey pub and in 1879 used the top story as the Victoria Music Hall. Later in the same year he changed the name to Queen Hotel.
