D.Atkinson “The Wheatsheaf dated back to the 17th Century and was probably the location nearby for the murder of the landlord, John Fletcher, by the highwayman Will Nevison which was marked by a stone further along the lane to Howley Hall. The Wheatsheaf had several sports fields around it and at least one amateur rugby team used the inn as its headquarters before the first world war. The pub was demolished in the 1930s.” |
